Some raging, drug-crazed lunatic kicked his door open and charged him!  It took 47 year old Eric exactly 3-seconds to drop the guy.

The cops showed up in minutes because someone else had already called.  Why?  Because this wasn’t the first door this lunatic was trying to kick open.  This was the first person to stop him, though!

That was actually part of Eric’s motive when he went to the door.  He heard noise.  He heard the pounding earlier.  He was already on his way when his own door was being kicked.  He planned to unlock it to see what was going on when this crazed maniac kicked the door open and charged into his apartment and actually attacked him!

Before he went into the Navy, Eric wanted to learn martial arts.  As a cook on board ships, he was almost never stationed somewhere that allowed him to train.  His last stop: San Diego.  He would be here until his enlistment was up.  This was his chance!

The problem was he was now in his 40s.  Less than a year ago, he had been in a bad motorcycle accident, and his knee never fully recovered.  It was his ankle that was the real problem, though.  Even walking could be difficult.  Could he kick?

This is a hard reality that a lot of self-defense systems really don’t address.  Sure, we can teach you to explode with a flurry of blows to the guy’s face – that IS part of our style.  You could even bolt in, take the guy to the ground, and choke him out.   That’s part of our system, too.

But seriously… when the guy is being a belligerent jerk?  Even a mildly violent jerk?  Now if he REALLY tries to hurt you, of course we prepare you for that.  The reality of living as a guy has this whole range of things between “I can just talk to him” and “I have to beat him to a pulp.”  Those in-between things come up a LOT MORE OFTEN than “pound him” events!

Outside of the Guardian Academy, you will RARELY find those situations meaningfully addressed.  It is almost as though everyone else assumes that either you’re 100% safe, or someone is trying to murder you!  Obviously not true!

“The customer was yelling at me nose to nose.  I didn’t know if he would get violent.  I did know that if he did, I’d probably get hurt.  But it we stop him, I sure don’t want a customer beat up in my parking lot!” – Tim, service manager. 

That’s real.  That’s the sort of thing that happens EVERY DAY.  If you’re Eric and some guy kicks open your front door, drop him.  That’s the higher end, dangerous stuff.  But if a customer is yelling, you want to know how to be safe, how to protect yourself, AND not hurt your customer!  (Or your co-worker, or, heaven forbid, an out of control boss!)

And women, by and large, were not interested in getting beat up.  If you are, there are plenty of options.  If you’re one of those people, man or woman, who doesn’t want to get beat up and doesn’t want to get hurt to train, ironically enough, to not get hurt – then you need something else.

Why would anyone train in martial arts?  To get in shape… to learn some ancient martial arts wisdom… but mostly To Protect Themselves!  I mean, if your ONLY goal was to get in shape, you have plenty of options.  The reason you would choose martial arts is because you want the martial art as part of your getting in shape!

So why do so many people risk getting beat up and hurt MORE training to protect themselves than they are likely to get hurt by an actual criminal?  Part of it is “worst case scenario training.”  Many martial arts instructor talk about “when you’re life is on the line…” as though every criminal assault is an attempted murder!  They say things like “It’s better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6” as though those are the only two choices!
